![]() ![]() I am using Ubuntu on old Core2 Duo machines with TBs of RAID storage. I dual boot into Linux on that machine and have no other Windows versions here. I have an i7 laptop with Win7 but I almost never boot into it. My personal journey left the Windows OS behind at XP. Besides, older tower cases hold lots of hard drives. I wanted to take advantage of obsolete junk lying around that is perfectly functional and equal in capability to newer, shinier HTPC components, even if the form factor is larger and the appearance is not so nice. After all the issues I had with Windows and proprietary software and bloat necessitating endless hardware upgrades, I got tired of paying for the privilege of debugging their junk for them and riding the upgrade treadmill. I was unwilling to spend anything above minimal $$ needed to get a system working. The most important part of this adventure is to identify your needs and goals in advance because mistakes up front can be difficult or expensive to remedy later. Unless you are willing to pay a service to do it for you, plan on spending lots of time online searching for tips and solutions. ![]() The unfortunate reality is that PCs are a royal pain to configure and maintain. Between the cross-platform capability of many tools and virtualization, the flavor of OS is becoming less important than its capability. I went with Linux, but even if you stick with Windows, much of the information here is relevant to you. Gaming? Just how much capability does it need, and how will you maintain the bleeding edge on a multi-purpose machine? How much time are you willing to spend configuring and maintaining? plan on the rest of your life Is energy consumption important? Fan noise?Īre you intending to learn new things in the process of building it or just pushbutton install?ĭo you need a 10' interface the children/spouse/friends can learn to use?ĭo you need bulletproof reliability? not likely to happen so forget that one You really need to identify what it is you hope to achieve with a HTPC/NAS? ![]() Sorry, I am not as familiar with the available newer tech as some on the forum, but I can share what I learned in case it helps you.
